MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit In AF134 the Eyetech advert claims that DCE are producing some BlizzardVision graphics cards under license from phase5. While I don't really know if this has actually happened, I had to check out DCE's website. On the DCE website (http://www.dcecom.de/) they also advertise Blizzard PPCs, Cyberstorm PPCs as well as 68k accelerators and other interesting stuff including a hardware MPEG audio decoder that I've never heard of. Maybe this stuff (the PPC and gfx cards I mean) has never actually been manufactured and has just been 'advertised' on the site for a while, but the website is dated 2000. Are DCE actually going to make these PPC cards? If not, why not, considering the supposedly huge number of back orders for the phase5 PPC cards? By the time it had gone "off the air" a fortnight ago, It was just under the 30,000 mark. Not brilliant, but certainly not bad either. Someone somewhere must have heard of it. Besides, I have had a stack of emails from people telling me how much they valued the service and how they miss it. I didn't do too badly surely? Any suggestions? Slightly late on the thread, but what about a tutorial on geekgadgets ?, perhaps with the latest current/alpha versions of the software on the CD. I know its a massive topic, but you could do gcc&egcs / sed&grep / jove&emacs / awk&tcl / ksh&scripts etc,.. in each tutorial, starting with the install and going through to decent usage of the progs. Any suggestions? Why not do an 'Amiga in the Real World' set of tutorials where you can explore some practical applications (suggested by afb members?) of an Amiga setup? With the exception of setting up web sites - a well worn subject - you could look at: o Designing a newsletter - A perfect vehicle for stretching the legs of Pagestream o Recording sports results - Using spreadsheets to maintain a league table. o House/garden design - All the rage on telly and PC CD-ROMs, show how to use Imagine or similar to pre-plan one of those DIY jobs. o Run a radio station - I have no idea how to do this. Maybe you could use ARexx to control a playlist and some juke-box-alike equipment for the multitude of CDs. etc... I'm sure there are better ideas out there than these. You could have boxouts detailing availability of hw/sw or getting to know the software. It's not through choice - work have forced it onto me as my Amiga is unable of handling MS formatted documents :( The thing is, I wouldn't mind if it was a decent machine, but it's a P75 with 32Mb RAM! Despite it being such an old machine & monitor, they've given me a brand new HP Deskjet 710C to go with it, and a seemingly new 3Com USR modem! Now where did I put my TurboPrint disk? ... That version was never very good and later ones are available (and more OS3.5 compatible). However, I run YAM on a 24-hour basis both here and at home with no trouble. It hasn't been the cause of any of the few crashes I experience. I can't comment on Wordworth (which has never been programmed in a particularly OS-friendly manner anyway) or ABackup. > I have also had problems with OS3.5,using YAM 2 & Voyager 3.When both are > running and > i try to save a fastlink the machine crashes. When i turn YAM 2 off and > save theres > no problem,it may be just my machine but the OS 3.5 & MCP problem has been Again, I run V3 almost constantly on this machine too, and while it's not as stable as I'd like, I don't see the connection between it and YAM. I think you'd probably find the same problem with running any two MUI programs, and that there's a problem with MUI for you, rather than these individual apps. Not if you're not using it. That might sound fatuous, but it won't degrade the performance of your machine at all by simply being plugged in. However, because of the fact that it (and indeed any Zorro II busboard) can't handle DMA, then any card plugged into it *will* have to use the processor, thereby slowing your machine down. However, the trade off is well worth while in most instances I would imagine. This is the 21st century NOT 1990. Tell them to start saving. A quid or more a week and then spend it on 3.1! Internet access could be conceivably be accessible from any computer! As long as its got a TCPIP and PPP access you can access the net. Web browsing may be difficult but email, ftp and ircing doesn`t need much CPU power. Even A500s can use ALynx to use the web (minus the gfx). I read that an an ancient TI-99/4a managed to browse the web as well! So, for a A500 it ain`t impossible (a bit slow). I agree there. The cost is far too much and there isn`t much software around to make the _full_ use of it! And you are trying to fit them in every nook and crany you can find and then discovering that some things won`t work with one another or you need another patch or another upgrade to fix it... :( >But you're left with a nicer system, imho. I would rather use my 030 >AGA Amiga than the latest Windows PC for most tasks. Besides, who >needs the latest, fastest Voodoo card unless you're heavily into 3D >games, which you claim you're not. I find AGA far too slow and Chip RAM to be a big bottleneck on Amigas. How many people use AGA 256 colour Workbenchs! Not many, slugs on a bad day, run faster than that! The BoXeR could have made a killing last Christmas, if it had been released when they said it should. At least it doesn`t have any of the restrictions the current A1200s and A4000s have and come with full Zorro 3 and unlimited chip ram, faster chipset and can be fitted in _cheap_ ATX type boxes than the overpriced Towers we have to buy nowadays! The only update has been the Blitz Support Suite but that is also hard to get hold off as well. As for OS 3.5, the majority of your software should work. The only thing to watch out for is third party patches such as MCP and some Icon programs that do not like the new ColourIcon system introduced in OS3.5. Some new updates are available that fix them.
